About
South Australia’s Virtual Power Plant (SAVPP), Australia’s largest residential VPP, reduces the energy bills of vulnerable South Australians through a decentralised power plant using the roofs and walls of public housing assets across the state.
More than 6,000 social housing tenants across South Australia already benefit from SAVPP, with more tenants continuing to join the program every month.
In 2024 alone, SAVPP delivered an estimated $3.5 million in bill savings to participating social housing tenants across the state. More than 2,000 tenants also joined SAVPP in 2024, marking the program’s largest year of customer growth.
All South Australians benefit from SAVPP as it supports the reliability and security of energy supply on the distribution network. SAVPP was the first VPP in Australia registered to provide market and ancillary grid services, and at present is registered with AEMO to provide 34 megawatts of grid support.
This size, scale, and millions of dollars in bill savings have been achieved through a project that started life as a trial for 100 households with a $2 million state government grant. This trial has now grown to a commercially viable enterprise fully privately funded, providing an exemplar of public and private partnerships.
