About

The Waratah Super Battery Project is critical for NSW’s energy security as coal-fired power stations close. It will allow more renewable energy from regional NSW to reach the Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra regions.

The project is more than just a battery. It has multiple parts that work together to help it perform its unique role. It also includes an overarching control system, arrangements for paired generation services, and upgrades to the state’s existing transmission network.

Together, these parts let it act as a ‘shock absorber’ for the energy system in the event of power surges and blackouts from events like lightning strikes.

The project is special for several reasons:

- It is one of the largest and most powerful utility scale batteries in the world, capable of providing 850 megawatts for 2 hours.
- It has one of the largest points of connection in Australia’s National Electricity Market.
- Until now, there has never been a battery of this scale used to increase network capacity anywhere in the world.
- It’s faster to implement than new transmission lines and allows existing lines to be run harder.

The project will be delivered and operational in 2025.
