About
Ginninderry is a masterplanned community developed through a joint venture between the ACT Government and Riverview Developments. Designed to be an all-electric, sustainable community, Ginninderry will eventually house 30,000 people by 2050 across the ACT-NSW border and has earned a six-star Green Star – Communities rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.
Ginninderry’s first suburb – Strathnairn, was the first suburb in the ACT consciously designed to be all-electric. With a suite of Housing Design Requirements including solar panels, home energy management systems and energy efficient appliances, residents benefit from lower energy costs.
Ginninderry’s masterplan also includes land allocated for centralised community batteries and electric vehicle charging. Future proofing Ginninderry as a distributed energy network (including both generation and storage) has meant that components and upgrades to technology can be incorporated within the open spaces of Ginninderry as technology improves – while providing an all-electric backbone of infrastructure across the site.
These initiatives have strengthened Ginninderry’s role in sustainability leadership, engaging peak bodies and influencing policy.
Ginninderry’s advocacy of an all-electric suburb led to the ACT Government’s removal of the mandatory requirements for gas connections for residential development and its subsequent ban on gas connections across the whole of Canberra.
